We have been waiting, waiting, and waiting for rain. We usually get soft, gentle winter rain but this year for some reason we got very little. It has been so very dry here that we have been waiting for months and months to get some real measurable rain. The summer heat builds and builds through the month of June until it is nearly unbearable when July comes and there are distant rumblings and faint whiffs of moisture in the air. I have heard that in some places (Washington State) rain doesn't have a smell and that water doesn't smell different on various surfaces. Here rain on sidewalk smells different than rain on asphalt, they both smell different than rain on dirt. I love the smell of rain on any surface. I am so happy the monsoons are here. Our summer rain is loud, fierce and fast. Sometimes it last five minutes, sometimes half and hour and it generally occurs late in the afternoon about 4:00 p.m. The monsoons are a glorious time.

What is this strange stuff falling from the sky?
It's been so long Zany forgot what rain was.
