Naptime is a very special time in my house I treat it as a nearly sacred time and never plan appointments or other things during it. I love to get things done in a quiet house while my little ones sleep or if I am pregnant I take a nap too. I try to make the napping time quiet and calm and I don't run the vacuum or other loud cleaning like unload the dishwasher. I often fold laundry or other quieter pursuits. My kids usually keep taking a daily nap until they go to kindergarten. Even as big kids if I declare a Carlton family nap they all will fall asleep and take a two hour nap.
In thinking of how I wanted this summer to go I realized I need to create a good napping environment for Archy and Zany/some quiet sanity time for me, so what to do with the three big boys? I decided to kill two birds with one stone and make a reading program with rewards and have designated quiet reading room time. It gets them reading and also keeps them quiet. After lunch, Archy and Zany take a nap while Quinton, Declan and McCoy have to stay in their rooms quietly playing kindle if they got their chores done that morning or reading, of course, they can nap if they want to nap too.
Our summer reading program consists of:
1. They pick a book to read and I approve the book
2. They read it and fill out a one page book report (see below) on the book
3. Then I give them a token which I pin up to a bulletin board creating a bookworm
4. When they redeem their token I draw a line through the token but it stays up on the bulletin board
(There is a list of rewards they can get at the bottom of this post)

Since they are going to be doing so much reading (hopefully) this summer I decided to buy some new books to encourage them. I mainly bought chapter books for Declan and McCoy but I found a couple girl picture books for Zany too. I got really lucky at the thrift store and hit the motherlode of kids chapter books and got all of these books below for only five bucks. I was most excited to find these vintage illustrated classics that I clearly remember having and reading when I was a kid. I haven't seen them for years and years so it was a pretty happy find for me. I think I will assign my kids to read them at some point and maybe even give them double tokens.

Here hoping for quiet afternoons spent reading or other worthwhile pursuits like napping!
