We had been promising the kids that we would take them to the corner market so they could spend the money they had saved up. It reminds me of and old time penny candy counter. In the novel A tree grows in Brooklyn (one of my all time favourites) there is scene where the neighbourhood children collect junk and scraps to sell and take the money and buy penny candy.
This is as close as you can get to penny candy, except Archy picked out a fifty cent sucker. No Archy that's to expensive.
Here pick out a five cent bubble gum.
Fifteen cent suckers (three different kinds), five cent licorice, five cent
gum a dollar really goes a long way.
Don't worry it's few and far between that they get to candy up. It was such a nice walk watching the moonrise. Sweet dreams!
